Russia Pushes Naval Design In Indian Ocean
Washington reports a secret pact fragment suggesting Soviet territorial aims toward the Indian Ocean. Since the 1960s Moscow built a naval presence with bases reportedly at Socotra Island Mogadishu and Mauritius trawler facilities while Israel and Ethiopia reportedly signed for Haleb and Fatimah islands. U.S. officials hedge on hard evidence and maintain a small naval presence as Britain shifts policy east of Suez. Moscow seeks to reopen the Suez Canal for maritime influence, while U.S. and allied responses remain split between gunboat diplomacy and nuclear-age restraint.
