Eat at Home to Save on Food Costs in 1976
The USDA Outlook and Situation Board says 1976 will bring about a 3 percent rise in overall retail food prices. Meals away from home should be about 7 percent higher than 1975, while store-bought at-home foods rise about 2.5 percent. Coffee, labor, and utility costs drive the increases, with farm food values down about 4 percent from last year. The board notes strong supplies and demand, plus higher middlemen costs, but expects prices to stay 2-4 percent above early-1976 averages next year.
