Six thousand South Vietnamese push into southeastern Cambodia
A major new three-pronged operation across 100 miles of the Cambodia Vietnam border saw about six thousand South Vietnamese troops move into southeastern Cambodia today. The goals included cutting North Vietnamese infiltration, destroying rebuilt bases, and easing pressure on Phnom Penh. Reports say some units may reach Takeo, while U Minh forest and Seven Mountains area battles continue. The U.S. destroyer Rowan shelled targets on the border and in the Ca Mau region, with 16 secondary explosions observed on the Hon Chong peninsula.

With the dry season and northbound moves, the Laotian panhandle has become the war’s focal point, though enemy air defenses remain light. Up to 400 missions daily, though weather has slowed operations recently, and the Shangri La plans to deploy three squadrons of Skyhawk bombers to ease congestion.
