Doctor Shortages Plague Rural Missouri Areas

JEFFERSON CITY Missouri faces a state wide shortage of specialized physicians. In Rolla residents travel 60 miles for ENT care while Norborne with 950 people has only one osteopathic doctor. Rural areas gained just five physicians from 1973 to 1975 and 84 percent of Missouri doctors practice in five metropolitan regions serving 70 percent of the population. The University of Missouri School of Medicine is increasing rural applicants and promoting family practice, but seven training facilities cannot support expanded residency without more funding.
