Court ok Texas plan on welfare aid cuts
The Supreme Court today approved the method used by Texas and 18 other states to reduce welfare benefits for families with some outside income. The 6-4 decision included Nixon appointees and Justice White in the majority. Dissenters argued the cuts violated federal welfare law. The court also rejected claims of racial discrimination and that larger cuts for families with dependents violated law, ruling the state’s approach not irrational.
