Nixon Shifts from Blockade as Port Mines Target Haiphong
An AP analysis explains Nixon pressures on North Vietnam using port mining rather than a formal blockade. The plan blocks Haiphong and other ports with magnetic and acoustic mines, giving ships a grace period before potential interdiction and signaling broader US aims to cut Soviet and Chinese military support to Hanoi.

Hopes Dwindle for 58 Miners in Sun Shine Silver Mine
A two man rescue team reached the 4800 foot level of the Sun Shine Silver Mine but returned to the surface without locating the trapped miners. Interior Department spokesman Lou Helm said another crew would be sent later to reach the main shaft about 4000 feet away as hopes dwindled for the 58 miners believed trapped since a recent fire. Thirty five miners died at other levels during the blaze, the mine's richest silver source. The rescue descended in a metal capsule through a four foot air shaft, taking nearly 12 hours and exhausting crews working in relays amid heat and humidity.
