In Chillicothe Missouri nearly one third of junior and senior high pupils walked out to protest the third defeat in five weeks of a proposed operating levy increase from 3 30 to 3 75. The plan tied most of the money to higher teacher salaries and would raise base pay from 7100 to 7700. About 300 of 900 students held a rally on the school lawn before an assembly where officials outlined possible next year changes and a board committee was formed to study adjustments.

Buffaloes escape zoo enclosure disrupts interstate traffic
Four buffalos escaped from Roger Williams Park zoo in Providence. They eluded officials for three hours, causing traffic disruptions on Interstate 95. One buffalo died of shock and another was killed by a truck. The remaining two were captured and returned to the zoo. The breakout was caused by an opening torn into the enclosure by vandals.

Seven Die In New Haven Apartment Fire
Seven persons were killed and five hospitalized after a four story Fair Haven apartment blaze. Six bodies were recovered after the Tuesday night alarm at 11:25 p m. the seventh victim was found Wednesday morning on the third floor. Firefighters battled the engulfing flames as the structure burned.
