Taxpayers Subsidize Russian Grain Haul by U.S. Tankers
The AP reports taxpayers are spending 50 000 to 100 000 dollars daily on subsidies for at least 63 U.S. owned tankers loading wheat and corn for the Soviet Union. Many ships wait weeks in Gulf ports for loading, with total subsidy time often 60 to 90 days, while at sea subsidies add 500 to 1000 dollars daily. The Gulf Queen exemplifies the program as a 70 000 ton tanker earning roughly 4 800 dollars per day during its 20 day sea round trip. The scheme aims to enable U.S. ships to handle about a third of grain shipments to Russia under a negotiated rate, bridging the cost gap with subsidies.
