Postal merger risks rate rises and possible delays
The Postal Service plans to merge air mail with first-class service by Aug. 1, setting 13 cents per ounce for domestic letters and potentially eliminating the air mail category. A rate hike could be delayed pending the Postal Rate Commission review, with Oct. 1 seen as the earliest date for any increase. The agency cites red ink and upcoming union contracts as pressures while promising equal or better service under the new system.
