Senate backs watchdog over inflation control authority
The Senate voted 44 to 41 to grant the administration a one year extension to monitor wages and prices and enforce anti inflation commitments by hundreds of major corporations. It rejected 57 to 31 a renewal of stand by wage and price controls. The move was attached to the International Economy Policy Act bill. One backer, Sen. Muskie, said preserving a mechanism to fight inflation is wise. The White House said the Cost of Living Council could enforce commitments until June 30 without new authority.

Jefferson City Md AP Speedy processing of Maryland income tax returns has saved the state about 100000 in interest and could help the Revenue Department meet its June 15 refund target. Revenue Director James R Spradling said deposits were made by April 25, a week earlier than last year and possibly the earliest in the department s history. He noted deposits within 10 days after the deadline would bring an estimated 100000 more in interest, adding that focus can return to refunds for taxpayers with the June 15 date still in reach.

M A Gibson district superintendent of Missouri Power and Light Co. is promoted to supervising engineer effective June 1 and will move to the general office in Jefferson City. A 95 year MPL veteran since 1934, Gibson has served civic roles in Mexico Planning and Zoning, Kiwanis, and the First Baptist Church. He and wife Maxine live at 1822 S Morris St with two children Carl H Frevert and J J McNamara. Frevert promoted to district auditor succeeding C K Winn who retires. Frevert joined MPL in Boonville in 1941, served in WWII, then climbed from storekeeper to junior auditor last year after moving to Mexico. He was educated in New Franklin and is married.
