Operation Homecoming In Last Phase
Operation Homecoming moves into its final phase as hospital jets bring 4 more American prisoners of war home. A total of 587 POWs were released from Vietnam and Laos, with 69 more to fly to the United States by Sunday. Capt. Robert T. White, 32, of Newport News, Virginia, an Army adviser, was among those to be handed over near Saigon and flown to the Philippines. Flights bound for Travis Air Force Base California Scott AFB Illinois and Kelly AFB Texas accompany the returnees. The arrivals followed two earlier flights that brought 32 men home for family reunions. Navy Lt. Cmdr. Phillip Kientzler praised the joyful welcomes as reunions loom for families. Marine CWO William E. Thomas Jr. had a radio reunion with his wife in Hawaii as his plane refueled en route to California.
