Not All Nixon Gifts Recorded, Auditors Say

Government auditors found that some gifts apparently received by President Nixon and his family from foreign governments were not officially recorded. The GAO urged tighter enforcement of the 1966 Foreign Gifts and Decorations Act, proposing penalties up to a year in jail and $1,000 fines for noncompliance. The report to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee noted gifts given directly to the First Family sometimes bypassed the Gift Unit, though officials said they could often trace them via thank you letters. The study also contrasted records from Johnson’s era as properly kept. Also noted: Kris Chase, 18 month old son of Jim and Mrs. Chase of Mexico, underwent surgery March 21 and is recuperating.
