Hunt For Perfect Tree Takes Forester's Time
Gene Brunk at the state tree nursery leads Missouri's tree improvement program started in 1967. He spends most time on black walnut, with other focus on cottonwood pine and red cedar. He has 80 superior black walnuts from thousands sifted, seeking straight trunk fast growth and good pruning. He has found three state champions, including a persimmon at Big Oak Tree State Park, and notes tree production is agriculture on slow motion.

Mexico Ledger reports on tree growth and logging quirks
The March 27 1971 Mexico Missouri ledger notes trees take decades to reach maturity. Cottonwoods are propagated by cuttings with Brunk firing tops with a .22 rifle to produce shoots. Walnuts are mostly seed planted. One walnut tree yielded twenty six hulls in a five gallon bucket. Brunk and Columbia forester Fred Whitt flagged a railroader for a ride back to the crossing to avoid carrying the heavy load, the conductor rushing to beat a 5 09 schedule.
