Zoo Cuts Meat Costs As Horsemeat Price Rises
Cincinnati Zoo faces higher meat bills with beef and horsemeat prices up from 28.5 to 50.5 cents per pound. About 2,500 pounds of meat weekly consumed by 2,500 animals costs roughly 65,000 dollars annually, forcing use of a prepared mix of horsemeat eggs yeast kidneys corn oil and additives for 95 percent of the herd. The remaining five percent refuse the substitute. Aged animals resist the change. Meanwhile, miners die feared in a blasting accident at Jitpur coal mine near Calcutta with 34 bodies recovered and 24 missing. Methane gas buildup is blamed and ventilation system issues debated.
