Housing Market Has New Troubles
New York reports that housing activity may lag despite easier mortgage access as inflation and recession widen gaps between housing costs and incomes. Economist Saul Klaman cites five keys to unlock demand, including tax cuts and energy relief, plus reform of savings institutions to broaden services and deposit rate flexibility. He foresees a slow upturn starting late spring 1975 with starts near 4.25 million for the year.

Death Ends Her Effort To Make It On Her Own
In Miami a 44 year old Puerto Rican mother Dolores Fernandez and her five year old daughter Narda were found dead from carbon monoxide poisoning in a rented cottage after electricity had been cut off for nonpayment. Fernandez worked at Blue Ribbon Laundry earning about 70 dollars weekly, leaving about 155 dollars monthly for basic expenses. Neighbors and officials note she was proud and independent, had recently moved from New York, and did not seek welfare. Her son Wilfredo Guzman described her as worried about providing for Narda in the Bronx slums. The landlady discovered the bodies and police said the case reflects hardship and pride that kept her from seeking aid.
