End of an era as Onoda surrenders after 29 years

Second Lieut Hiroo Onoda of the Japanese Imperial Army surrendered this week ending a 29 year guerrilla campaign in Lubang Philippines. He claimed he kept fighting World War II because his 1945 order directed him to. He obeyed his former commanding officer Yoshimi Taniguchi who arrived from Japan to order the surrender. He walked in in uniform with a Samurai sword, and his loyalty and discipline were praised while noting fatal soldierly brutality as a defining difference from American GIs who thought, improvised, and adjusted rather than blindly following failed plans. The piece extols the American soldier as the best in the world for his courage, duty, and ingenuity.
