Hardin Sees Uneasy Feelings Over High Soybean Prices

Washington AP Agriculture Secretary Clifford M. Hardin says he has an uneasy feeling when soybean prices rise and farmers talk about expanding production, but the 1971 outlook remains strong with record soybean output and a planned 7 percent acreage increase. Demand for soybeans, especially for oil, is high domestically and abroad, though competition from other crops could create trouble. Hardin notes potential world trade factors such as the Soviet sunflower oil and possible European oilseed restraints, but sees no imminent risk. A new substitution program allows blight-prone corn areas to plant soybeans on feed-grain land, involving 16 states.
