Washington reports that Social Security payments will move from paper checks to direct electronic deposits into recipients’ savings or checking accounts nationwide by year end. Georgia’s initial rollout drew 7.5 percent participation. Florida starts in April with about 25 percent. By decade’s end, officials target roughly 40 percent of payments electronically. The program follows last year’s direct mailing initiative to banks with 3.5 million signups.
