School Drama On Again In Legislature
Jefferson City AP The 1972 Missouri legislative session revisits the annual school aid dispute. A key House Education Committee bill would create a fourth May 15 distribution and permanent ongoing aid, after the Senate already passed it. Without it, three distributions in September December and March would continue. Comptroller Vaughn has transferred about 79.9 million to cover the March 15 allotment, bringing total transfers from general revenue since last July to 192.4 million. about 68.7 million remains due. Vaughn says funds could cover the balance if he can use all collections through mid May, with a minor Senate bill change. If not, schools risk missing this year's remaining funds. The panel may adjust the plan to assure full payment and Gov. Hearnes has urged a 35 million annual increase for 1972-73, to be decided with major appropriation bills next month.
