Mead Would Reduce Vote for School Levies in Missouri

Jefferson City AP The House Education Committee met Tuesday to hear a resolution by Rep Larry Mead to lower the school tax levy approval threshold from two thirds to a simple majority. The plan would permit a simple faculty vote on levies up to six dollars per hundred of assessed value. Columbia instructor Donald Rupp said past attempts to pass levies failed despite majority support due to the two thirds rule. The panel also considered a bill requiring districts to provide educational services for deaf students.
