Pig Tissue Heart Valve Implant Gives New Life
A 19 year old Florida woman received a pig tissue heart valve at Mount Sinai Hospital, a porcine heterograft replacing her defective valve. Doctors report she now can live a physically full life after surgery, with no active rejection due to the non living tissue. The pig valve size matches the aortic valve and the procedure has a high success rate in about 200 prior implants over several years.
