Nixon Briefed On Kudirka Case Ahead Of Moscow Trip
President Nixon received a briefing on Simas Kudirka a 45 year old Lithuanian sailor who claims American citizenship and was forced back to his Soviet vessel with Coast Guard permission. Kudirka is in a Urals prison serving a 10 year term for treason with no contact since October. Lithuanian groups argue Kudirka is an American citizen through his mother born in Brooklyn. Washington called the matter unfortunate and debated steps to prevent a repeat while lawmakers push for his release and for safe exit for Kudirka’s mother Marija Sulskiene who is a U.S. citizen awaiting exit from Lithuania. Congress pressures Kissinger to raise the issue in Moscow.
