Where Your Money Goes Where Your Money Goes

Gov. Warren E. Hearnes signed a pension bill raising retirement benefits for state workers and legislators. State employees repay none of their salaries toward pensions and receive refunds for pre Sept 1 contributions, equating roughly to a 5.2 percent pay increase. Legislators see higher accruals, rising from 4 to 5 percent of an $8,400 annual salary. Early retirement at 55 after 15 years of service becomes possible for state workers, with vesting reduced from 15 to 10 years. The state covers life insurance costs and the first $10 monthly of hospitalization, employees pay the rest. The Legislature previously rejected broader benefits in a referendum. The governor has 29 bills awaiting action with a June 29 deadline.
