Secretary of Defense James R. Schlesinger voiced reservations about the United States aiding Egypt to build nuclear power plants. He said he would have weighed the advantages and disadvantages, and Pentagon officials suggested he leans against the idea. The issue ties to normalization of relations with Egypt, following a seven year break, while Israel’s long-standing, nonruptured ties and its two reactors are noted. Critics have questioned whether aid could enable Egypt to pursue weapons, though no similar concerns are raised about Israel.
