Bomb Explosions Hit Election Day in Spain
MADRID AP Separate bombings this morning injured three persons and damaged commuter rail lines just before polling places opened for Spain's first free election in 41 years. In Seville a bomb in the Justice Ministry building exploded as a guard removed it. Two rail-line bombs in the Basque country were blamed on Basque nationalists seeking to disrupt voting. Polls opened with long lines and officials predicted about 80 percent turnout of 23 million voters. No party expected to win a majority in the Cortes. Leading polls showed leftist parties ahead of the center right coalition and the Socialist Workers party, with several parties bunched behind. Prime Minister Suarez had not actively campaigned and urged a mandate. the government appealed for a large turnout as a civic duty. The appeal was broadcast by Lt Gen Manuel Gutierrez Mellado, vice president in charge of defense, signaling army support for the election.
