Magruder Says President Didn't Know About Wiretap

Jeb Stuart Magruder testified at the Senate Watergate hearings that Nixon had no knowledge of the wiretap plan though a White House aide was told of it three months before it happened. He said Mitchell approved the final $250,000 bugging proposal on March 30, 1972, at Key Biscayne Florida after earlier rejections, and that Liddy proposed the plan. Magruder claimed the cover up followed quickly after the wiretaps were detected and that he would plead guilty to one count of conspiracy.

Not Very Likely Gas Tax Hike

Washington AP report says Treasury Secretary George P. Shultz viewed a federal gasoline tax increase as very unlikely. He had indicated the administration considered boosting the 4 cent per gallon excise tax to curb usage amid shortages, but he ruled out the proposal during a press conference on Nixon's new 60 day price freeze. The option had been discussed in recent weeks amid economy talks.

Low Rent Housing Rates To Offset Subsidy Rise Planned

Mexico Housing Authority voted to raise rent schedules to offset a possible loss of a $20,000 federal subsidy. One bedroom rents jump from $19 to $30, two from $29 to $45, three from $39 to $60, and four from $49 to $75, while 25 percent of adjusted gross income remains the cap for affordable housing. An elderly pensioner may see little change if the 25 percent rule keeps rent steady. The authority projects about $15,000 additional yearly revenue starting Oct. 1 and added a $270,000 West Street site improvement contract for 15 projects.
