Congress Split Over Energy Tax Proposals and Debates
In Washington Democrats clash over Ford energy plans as Ways and Means prepares a vast energy tax package with about 160 amendments. The bill would raise gasoline taxes by up to 20 cents, with rebates to most adults, while Senate debates a New Hampshire race and a tight recount. Ford opposes a strip mine bill he says harms jobs. Udall argues the measure creates jobs.

Trucker Missing After Truck Plunges Through Warsaw Bridge
Divers hunt the Osage River for Ronald L. Waller, 25, of Steelville, Mo., driver of a tractor semitrailer that fell through the floor of Warsaw’s swinging bridge. The truck, loaded with grain, disappeared into about 25 feet of water as the bridge floor collapsed between midnight and 4 a.m. Waller swam to the east bank and was treated for minor injuries. Authorities closed the bridge, rerouted traffic, and assessed whether to repair or replace the aging span. Oil slick harbored by leakage from the submerged truck spread on the river as engineers mull plans for a new bridge.
