In May 5.2 percent U S jobless rate rose for the first time in four months as teenage unemployment surged. Labor Department reports 4.7 million Americans jobless with May earnings up 1.5 percent and weekly pay averaging 151.52 dollars.
The Senate refused to order U S troop cuts overseas following Nixon administration advice. Mansfield proposed reductions of 125000 and 76000, both defeated on roll calls 54 35 and 46 44. Kissinger warned unilateral cuts could harm NATO Warsaw Pact negotiations.
Washington AP Pan American World Airways and Trans World Airlines dropped talks on reducing transatlantic competition. Officials said further pooling or route trading talks would be pointless unless circumstances change. Jet-fuel costs drove losses. TWA and Pan Am disputed which route to drop amid stalled consensus.
SAN FRANCISCO AP The FBI hunted fugitive heiress Patricia Hearst after a federal grand jury indicted her for the April 15 bank holdup by the Symbionese Liberation Army. The indictment shifts Hearst from material witness to suspected felon in U S District Court.
Jefferson City AP reports Marvin Nodiss, 28, was named director of the Division of Planning and Program Coordination for Missouri's new Department of Natural Resources. The appointment, effective July 1, follows Nodiss’s prior service as administrative and program assistant to Gov. Christopher S. Bond during Bond’s tenure as state auditor.
Revenue officials examine a switch to a 3 cent per plate glass beaded reflectorized design. A June 14 hearing will include James R. Spradling Raymond P. Hogg and Sam S. Smith as Prison Industries plans a 6 million plate order. Current 13 cent plates cost 808000 with proposed 200000 savings estimated annually.
AAP survey shows Exxon, Mobil, Standard of California, Continental, Standard of Indiana, Shell, Atlantic Richfield, Union and Mobil raising nonunion U.S. employees pay. Some offer union workers a one month bonus or loan option.
In Inglewood California a man battered two teens and stabbed a homeowner, then killed Larry Calhoun 30 as he fled. Police found 18 month old Shamonda unharmed beside the girl’s body. Detectives have no motive or leads. Eric Dwayne Dixon 18 and Regina Lynch 19 identified among victims.
Robert M. White II editor of the Mexico Ledger told the Kansas City Rotary Club that American newspapers are improving and will get better despite battles with readers and officials. He noted technology changing papers toward higher quality and more content while warning on public perception. Also reported is the birth of a six pound daughter to Mr and Mrs Michael G Martin of Vandalia at Audrain Medical Center with father employed at Hercules Chemical Co.
Public school officials reacted with disappointment after voters rejected a 66 cent tax increase in St. Louis. Unofficial results show 38,987 against and 23,012 for the measure, which would have funded teacher raises and class-size reductions. Andrew M. Doyle, president of the St. Louis Board of Education, warned of program cuts and impacts on neighborhood property values and city welfare. City officials supported the levy, while teachers and a civil rights group opposed it. If approved, the levy would have raised the rate from 2.69 to 3.35 per 100 assessed valuation. the last increase was 15 cents in 1989.
The Mexico Regional Diabetes Association plans a Saturday Bike-athon from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. to raise funds for the Central Missouri Diabetic Children's Camp. Prizes include three bicycles, three transistor radios, and a 12 inch portable TV. Age groups are 8–13, 14–17, and 18 plus. Co-chairs are Mrs. Ehrhardt and Miss Karen Williams. Max L. Brand was named director of the Missouri Division of Youth Services in the Department of Social Services amid a state reorganization. The consultant from Georgia Youth Services was chosen after a nationwide search and will assume duties July 1. Brand has eight years of juvenile justice experience.
Audrain County treasurer Mrs. Hattie Wood reports the final state aid payment for the 1973-74 year has been mailed totaling 340,638 dollars. Mexico schools receive 208,641 dollars, Vandalia 82,251 dollars, Community R-6 40,178 dollars, and Hi-Way R-3 9,568 dollars.
An AP survey finds drought in Africa and underproduction lifting sisal baling twine prices. Farmers face scarce supply and surging costs as U S distributors report oversold orders and shipments delays. Mexico’s sisal crop lags, while polypropylene twine also remains scarce.
FBI Director Clarence M. Kelley told the Senate Appropriations Committee that a substantial portion of the 979 Soviet officials assigned in the United States have been identified as intelligence operatives. He said the PRC missions in the U S are potential bases for officers and that Soviet agents operate under diplomatic cover in Washington San Francisco and New York. The FBI plans to reassign more agents as part of counterintelligence efforts and noted many Soviet bloc officials in the U S are also identified as intelligence agents.

Each location has specific morning or afternoon slots across Monday to Friday.
The Senate rejected two Mansfield amendments to force withdrawal of overseas troops. In the 125,000 cut proposal the 54-35 tally showed Democratic support from Eagleton Missouri. In the 76,000 cut proposal the 46-44 score reflected further party divisions and listed voting names.
Washington AP reports chairman Wilbur Mills will bring an energy windfall tax bill to the House floor next week with unlimited amendments. The measure imposes windfall taxes on oil profits, limits foreign ops relief, and phases out the 22 percent depletion allowance over three to five years. Some members fear chaos in open debate, and doubts about Senate approval of a floor-written bill. Mills plans a Monday committee meeting to back floor action.
In New Franklin Missouri two year old siblings Terry and Sherry Strope died in a mobile home fire on Thursday night. Their mother Sandra Strope was hospitalized in Boonville with minor injuries after attempting to rescue them. Authorities cited a faulty furnace as the apparent cause.
James L. Passey director of the Missouri Tourism Commission will be guest speaker at the Mexico Kiwanis Club luncheon Tuesday at Monterey Restaurant. He oversees tourism and promotional work statewide and leads a national drive to attract visitors to Missouri. He serves in several industry groups and committees. Eldon Burgess chairs June programs for the club.
The 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled an environmental impact statement for the Harry S. Truman Dam on the Osage River was adequate and work may continue. environmental groups had protested that the Corps statement was insufficient. The dam is about one third complete and has cost $137 million to date.
Mr and Mrs Ronnie Stuart and their sons Allen Wayne Ronnie Lee and Russell Dean have moved south of Mexico to a new double wide mobile home from Cameron. Mr Stuart is son of J R Stuart of west of Mexico and Mrs Stuart formerly Mary Lou Ball daughter of Lebbins Ball of Mexico. Banks in Jefferson City offer 10 percent premium for pennies in quantities of 50 or more.
The Chat N' Chu restaurant at 925 Clark was found with a ajar rear door by a Mexico Public Safety officer during a routine patrol. Owner Carl Thompson believes the door was entered through an unlocked window on the north side. Inside, cash drawer lids were closed and fryers on. Investigation ongoing.
Washington AP confirms J William Middendorf II as secretary of the Navy. The former New York banker and ambassador to the Netherlands was promoted from Navy undersecretary, a post he has held since last year.
President Nixon spends time at Camp David in Maryland after a dinner cruise aboard the Navy yacht Sequoia. Mrs Nixon and Tricia Cox joined him on the cruise but did not accompany him to the camp.
