McGovern Denies Overspending in California Primary
Senator George McGovern denied charges from Humphrey campaign manager Jack Chestnut that his California media spending exceeded the state limit. Chestnut cited a $446,000 outlay against a $413,000 cap, while McGovern claimed about $260,000 spent with a $450,000 cap before the primary. McGovern insisted he would stay within the allowed total of $460,000 including transfers, and spoke in Covina about releasing POWs within 90 days of inauguration tied to withdrawing forces from Vietnam. Humphrey, meanwhile, attacked financially with slim attendance at a Santa Barbara lunch, and Los Angeles Mayor Sam Yorty floated Wallace as a potential running mate but dismissed the idea for ideological reasons.
