In Philadelphia the Episcopal Church ordained its first women priests amid celebration and controversy. Eleven women, with four bishops, affirmed ordination while some clergy voiced dissent. Disciplinary measures were hinted as the church weighs gendered resistance to long-standing male dominance and apostolic succession standards.
The Rev. Katrina Swanson and 10 other women deacons were ordained as priests in Kansas City amid debates over future approvals. Bishop Edward Welles II and four ordaining bishops led the service, with Welles suggesting preparations for alternative paths if the 1976 General Convention does not authorize female ordination. Swanson, wife of rector Rev. George Swanson, said the ceremony marked a historic step forward and affirmed women's priesthood.
