A May 14 blaze at the Ambassador Hotel, longtime St Louis hostelry near Forest Park, killed four and injured ten. Danforth says Missouri allows multi bank ownership
Atty Gen John C Danforth ruled there is no Missouri law prohibiting a corporation from owning controlling interests in two or more banks or trust companies. He said such ownership would not be branch banking even if the banks cooperate on loans or act as correspondents. Individuals may also hold controlling stakes in multiple banks under current laws. The opinion was for Herman W Huber, Jefferson City, chairman of the State Banking Board.
