John F. Wayland of the EPA Kansas City office visits Mexico to inspect public sewer damage from the May 31 rains. He represents the FDAA and will recommend grant funding to restore public property. He will also visit Vandalia later to assess flood related issues.
Kansas Secretary of Agriculture Roy Freeland warns a 1 billion dollar drop in cash farm income this year is possible due to dry weather and adverse cattle markets. He notes eastern corn hit hard by heat, with irrigated corn also yielding poorly, while other crops suffer but less severely.
University of Missouri president C Brice Ratchford requests a 28.5 million boost to a 200.2 million budget for 1976 76, citing inflation. The four campus plan calls for 133 million from the state, with the rest from students and federal sources. Salary rises of 8 percent and 5.2 million for program improvements are included, mainly for new programs at St Louis campus. The finance committee will review before recommending to the full board. San Francisco AP report: mule Monopoly valued at $1,000 was "arrested" July 5 after grazing on city hall lawn. Owner Lynn Wall, 56, says he will not pay a $25 fine or daily $5 grain charge, until reimbursed for grain. Authorities sought ASPCA involvement. the mule remains held.
Consolidated Edison of New York will resume its quarterly dividend at 20 cents per share, payable Sept. 15, after omitting the usual 45-cent dividend last month. The move followed improved second-quarter earnings and revenue, with six-month earnings totaling about 99.32 million dollars. The stock rose about $1 on the NYSE, closing around 8. Ramada Inn planning a 105-unit hotel at I-70 and Missouri 5 in Boonville, with possible June opening.
Senate Foreign Relations Committee has no hard evidence Kissinger initiated wiretaps on 17 officials and newsmen in 1969 to 1971. Ja vits says no firm proof yet. Fulbright cautions premature conclusions. Haig to testify as inquiry nears finish.
Charles Nathan Bradley, a five pound seven ounce boy, born Tuesday at 1 49 a m to Mr and Mrs Leon Bradley of Point Lookout. He joins a brother, Carl. The father is director of the School of the Ozarks music department and director of the Miss Missouri Orchestra.
Several oil companies report sharp rises in profits for the second quarter. Standard Oil Co. of Indiana shows after-tax earnings up 131 percent to $280 million on $2.47 billion revenue. Shell Oil and Cities Service also post double-digit gains, while Citgo notes an extraordinary gain in 1973 that affects year comparisons.
In Independence Missouri comedian Jerry Lewis opened the post office box for a nationwide drive to raise funds for a life sized statue of Harry S. Truman to be placed in Independence Square near the Truman residence. Lewis praised Truman as a courageous leader who faced tough times.
Spain shifts toward a post Franco era as Generalissimo Franco, gravely ill, transfers chief of state powers to Prince Juan Carlos de Borbon. Officials see it as irreversible, though Franco could reclaim powers. doctors foresee a long recovery and political implications loom for the prince and Madrid leadership.
FAA said Aerolineas Argentinas Flight 340, a Boeing 707 with 80 aboard, was hijacked after leaving Rio de Janeiro but landed safely at Kennedy Airport at 9:22 a.m. The plane was boarded by FBI and other agents. no injuries reported and cockpit appeared normal. Authorities stated they did not believe the jet was commandeered at the time.
Armco Steel Corp announced a multi million dollar expansion of its Kansas City operation. Governor Bond said the project will upgrade the agricultural, construction and mining division, create several hundred jobs, add two new electric furnaces increasing production capacity by 50 percent, with completion set for April 1979.
Rep. Steve Vossmeyer, D St. Louis, urged Gov. Bond to convene a September veto session to clarify the ambulance licensing law. He argued current wording could bar transporting injured to near facilities by police, risking life. Bond has refused to call special sessions on reform or interest rate hikes.
In San Clemente, President Nixon will watch none of the televised House Judiciary Committee impeachment hearings tonight, according to Press Secretary Ronald L. Ziegler. Earlier he said he watched none of the Senate Watergate committee hearings, then admitted he had sometimes peeked.
