Washington Claims Industry Up A Sign, Growth Seen

Washington officials forecast a modest rise in real GNP this year with unemployment easing only gradually. They see a 4.7 percent June jobless rate, inflation cooling to 3 to 3.5 percent by year end, and a sharper fourth quarter growth with better mortgage terms and revived housing, while cautioned by pain from inflation and credit tightness. The GNP deflator remains the key inflation measure, and the second quarter shows a 4.5 percent gain to about 970.1 billion dollars annual rate.
