Night battles erupt as army enters Belfast IRA districts

Gun battles raged through the night in Catholic areas of Belfast as British troops abandoned a low profile stance and pressed an offensive against the IRA. Three soldiers and three civilians died, raising the toll to 16 since Wednesday and 492 in three years of Northern Ireland violence. The army seized Andersonstown, the IRA no go district, in a bid to quell gunmen who had fired on an army post for days, prompting anticipated pressure to move into other Catholic districts like Bogside and Free Derry. About 700 troops remained in Andersonstown early today, with plans unclear on how long they would stay. The operation marked a reversal of Whitelaw policy to reduce military activity. A sandbagged post on Lenadoon Avenue endured a five hour assault before reinforcements arrived. one soldier died and another was wounded. Violence spread to Ardoyne Falls Road Ballymurphy New Lodge and city center after the takeover.
