Mutiny General Larsen Receives Medal and Pacific Command

Lt. Gen. Stanley R. Larsen, 58, commander of the 6th Army, gets the Distinguished Service Medal and a 21-gun salute at the Presidio as he transfers to become deputy commander-in-chief of U.S. Army Pacific in Hawaii. The move follows the Presidio mutiny case linked to the long court martial of 27 soldiers in 1968 and later overturned on intent. Larsen praised Presidio improvements and noted his three-year command helped turn the site into parkland. Alexander D. Surles Jr. will succeed him in San Francisco, reporting to Stuttgart as chief of staff of U.S. European Command.

Mission Singer Priest Has Mass

A young priest refused ordination in St Louis celebrated his first mass in Queens New York. Rev John Francis Coyne 25 and four fellow seminarians of the Mission Singers studied with the Montfort Fathers in St Louis. They formed a Contemporary Mission to serve slums but Cardinal Carberry barred ordination and mass in St Louis. Coyne and others later received local bishops approval to celebrate in their home towns. Coyne described the group as loose yet committed to living with those they serve. A pastor conference in Bolivar was noted in passing.
