China Frees Bishop Walsh After 12 Years Captivity
AP report from Hong Kong says Roman Catholic Bishop James Edward Walsh was released after about 12 years in Communist captivity. The Chinese stated another American, Hugh Frances Redmond of Yonkers, killed himself in prison three months earlier. Redmond reportedly died after self‑inflicted wounds with a razor, with cremation and Red Cross notification. Walsh, arrested in 1958 and convicted of espionage in 1960, was said to be on the way to Hong Kong for rest and may not be photographed or interviewed immediately. Eight other Americans were known to be in Chinese captivity or believed held.
