Bringing Flowers Indoors How to Extend Cut Flower Life
Outdoor blooms last longer on the plant in summer and indoors when cut. Cut stems when crisp early morning or evening, recut under water to avoid air bubbles, and place in warm water immediately. Remove foliage, avoid drafts, and use preservatives or boric acid to curb bacteria. Some flowers benefit from warm water hardening, while sugar in water can hasten decay.
Farm laborer awarded 100000 for false arrest by trooper
J P Holt, a 54 year old farm laborer from Brockport, was arrested by a New York state trooper to get him out of the cold after seeking warmth and medicine. The Court of Appeals upheld a $100,000 award for false arrest and false imprisonment and for lack of medical care, noting the trooper acted cruelly in detaining him during dire distress. Holt suffered frostbite and pneumonia, leading to amputations of one leg below the knee, part of the other foot, and four fingers.
