Carter Pleased With Energy Tax Action in House
The Carter administration praised the House Ways and Means Committee for its energy tax plan despite a 40 percent cut in the energy-saving goal. The bill, projected to save about 2.8 million barrels daily by 1985, would raise roughly $55.3 billion from 1978 to 1985, with a $1 billion a year impact per one cent per gallon gasoline tax. It proposes a new oil tax, refunds of about $20 per adult, tax credits for weatherizing homes, and incentives for industry to switch to coal, while ending the itemized deduction for state and local gasoline taxes.
