Odd Weather From Jet Stream Upends Winter Patterns

AP science writer FRANK CAREY reports that the jet stream, a 300 mile per hour river of air, has shifted north over the Gulf and Atlantic coasts and south over the western U S causing unusually warm conditions east and cold conditions west this winter. The result includes rapid temperature swings, rare events, and storms tracked away from typical routes. Meteorologist James Wagner notes this erratic pattern mirrors winters of 1951-52 and earlier, with uncertain duration and no reliable next-season forecast.
