Economic Index Slides Downward
Washington AP reports that the government leading indicators fell 24 percent in December with November revised to a 3.5 percent drop, marking the worst consecutive decline since 1948. The nine-factor composite signals rising unemployment, smaller pay, and reduced consumer spending, challenging revival hopes by midyear. Initial jobless claims surged to 530,000 for December, while average hours and durable goods orders also slipped.
