A wildcat strike by shopcraft workers hit railroads including Burlington Northern Chesapeake & Ohio and Louisville & Nashville in the Midwest and South. A federal judge issued a temporary injunction ordering four crafts unions to end the walkout, and Burlington said operations were returning to normal. About 6,250 workers were involved, with 4,000 from the Brotherhood of Railway Carmen. 3,000 affected at Chessie System yards in the Tri-State area. Pickets appeared at several yards, but no passenger trains were reported disrupted. The strike followed stalled wage negotiations and rapid court action to halt the walkout.
