New Ike Dollar Has No Silver
Philadelphia AP. The new one dollar coin features Gen Dwight D Eisenhower with an eagle on the reverse. Unlike earlier issues it contains no silver. The design was unveiled by designer Frank Gasparro and Mint director Mary Brooks. A trial striking used a 130 ton press creating a heroic likeness of Eisenhower. The coin will carry 40 percent silver in proofs and uncirculated editions after July 1, but general circulation coins will use cupronickel. Previous Ike Dollars and the Liberty Dollar contained silver or gold.
