Standard Wants Out Of Elk Hills
An official of Standard Oil Co. of California confirmed it is seeking to end its agreement with the Navy to operate the Elk Hills Naval Petroleum Reserve. The move follows criticism over the dual role, as Standard holds 20 percent of Elk Hills and operates for the Navy. A letter was sent to the Navy seeking comments on severing the contract ahead of the nine month notice required, with the 1976 expiry date. President Ford's State of the Union urged quick legislation to allow commercial oil production at Elk Hills as part of reducing dependence on foreign oil by 1985.
