Death Toll Rises After Pathfinder Hotel Blast in Fremont
In Fremont Nebraska the Pathfinder hotel explosion and fire on Saturday left 12 dead by Monday as firefighters pressed a third day of searching through twisted concrete and debris. Officials fear the final toll may reach twenty with six to nine more bodies possibly buried in the northwest caved area. County Attorney F A Gossett III, newly appointed, said he hopes to have a missing-person list Monday. The blast ruptured gas and water mains, flooding the basement. Eleven bodies were recovered Saturday and the 12th, Louis Hruska, a hotel barber, was found Sunday. Gossett praised responders and noted a weekday exposure could have produced higher casualties.

Army Junta Takes Control In Ecuador
A three man junta seized Ecuadorian military power during a violent weekend reshuffle, pledging to stay in power through 1977. Gen Guillermo Duran Arcentales Vice Admiral Alfredo Poveda Borbone and Gen Luis Leoro Franco replaced Gen Guillermo Rodriguez Lara after his daughters wedding, amid curfew and media crackdowns. Former cabinet officers criticized the move as civilians called for elections while a border resistance was announced but credibility waned. Rodriguez Lara and his son left the palace for the ranch, saying the step was taken without military pressure.

Seventy Term Senator Won't Seek Re election in Missouri
State Sen Albert M Spradling Jr announced he will not run again, citing Missouri campaign disclosure laws requiring his clients be named. He said disclosure could violate his ethics canon and imperil clients, two of whom seek to develop new business in Missouri. The decision comes as the legislative term ends after 24 years in service.
