Retailers oppose city sales tax faced by council
City retailers and businessmen packed the council chamber to oppose an annexation linked penny sales tax. The measure pairs a sales tax with a 2 cent cut in real estate taxes and elimination of personal property taxes on household goods if voters approve. The ordinance, read for first of three times, sets February 16 as election date. Mayor Williams criticized tax reform supporters as not attending the meeting.
