Kansas City AP A union strike by Missouri Public Service Co. workers began at 12:01 a.m. with no service disruption reported. Richard C. Green says 143,272 customers in 222 communities across 28 western Missouri counties are served by supervisors while wage talks continue. The 30-day extension of a three-year contract expired Sept. 30, with a day-to-day strike action now in effect and union demands at 39 percent wage increases versus company offers of 24 percent over three years. Linemen earn $4.17 hourly. offers rise to $4.55 first year plus 8 and 7 percent in subsequent years. The union seeks $4.75 initially and 10 percent raises in later years.
Alycia Hernandez fell into a 10 by 10 inch hole at a storm drainage site in Lomita California. Rescue teams dug a shaft and angled tunnel to reach her after 54 hours. The 3 year old was brought to the surface uninjured and released after observation.
Sacramento AP report says District Attorney John Price will not prosecute John Wayne over an alleged obscene confrontation with Vietnam war protestors waving Viet Cong flags at an inaugural gala for Gov Ronald Reagan. Wayne denies the incident. Gregory Kirkwood filed the complaint for disturbing the peace.
South San Francisco city council moved to ban sale of drinks in cans or no return bottles. The ordinance carries a 100 dollar fine or 30 days in jail for violations, approved on first reading by all five members. Final action set for February 1. The push began as a high school ecology class project by Gene Mullin and Robert Jacobs at South San Francisco High School.
