Caution Urged On Consumer Credit Laws

Washington AP A national commission proposes major revisions to make credit cheaper and easier to obtain while urging caution in adoption. The panel backs free entry for small lenders and banks on competitive terms, while 85 recommendations cover debt collection bans and protections for consumers and lenders. The report notes nondiscriminatory access for creditworthy applicants and urges states to curb discrimination against women, with concerns over inner city debt collection and poverty tied to expanding credit access. Rep Leonor Sullivan warns legislatures not to rush action and acknowledges most recommendations are staff-driven.
