DETROIT AP The auto industry closed its tumultuous year with new production cutbacks and hints of more. Chrysler shut three plants for at least a week and cut shifts, laying off about 10 800 hourly workers. Ford announced further cuts and open ended furloughs totaling around 29 000. Industry wide January layoffs reached about 280 000, with UAW calling them the worst since the 1930s. Chrysler also planned white collar layoffs around 20 000, as plant reopenings and shutdowns continued to realign output with weak demand.
