Residency Petition Aims to Enable Danforth Gubernatorial Run

In St Charles Missouri organizers say an initiative drive seeks to alter the residency requirement for governor from ten to five years so Danforth can run in 1972. Petitions were sent to counties via coordinators from his failed Senate bid. Governor Hearnes reportedly favors placing the issue on a 1972 ballot if enough signatures are gathered. Danforth lived in New York in 1966, which critics cite to question eligibility.

Oklahoma Interstate Sealed Off by Snowbound Lockdown

Northern and northwestern Oklahoma remained a snowbound by road paralysis as I-36 was closed to northbound traffic at the state line. Conscientious objector status debated during draft hearing

The Services Committee considered a three-year nonmilitary service requirement for COs as a test of sincerity. Rep. F Edward Hebert called the plan radical, arguing performance proves sincerity, while witnesses included Melvin Laird and Curtis Tarr. Defense urged drafting 2,100 doctors and dentists as medical volunteer shortfalls persist. Beginning July 1, 1,631 medical doctors, 77 osteopaths, and 536 dentists would be drafted for two years. Hebert proposed COs serve three years in public or private essential-work roles with no extra penalties beyond immediate military duty if assignments fail. He argued an all volunteer Army requires continued drafting and suggested higher starting pay than Nixon’s 50 percent plan. Hebert warned the draft must be extended to build an all-volunteer force.
