Kissinger Returns From France After Talks On Middle East
Secretary of State Kissinger and President Giscard d Estaing spoke over breakfast in Paris as Kissinger headed home to Washington. They discussed peace prospects in the Middle East and preparations for a conference between oil producers and consumers. Kissinger noted progress toward a preparatory meeting, likely in Paris in late March. Secretary Kissinger plans studies of further U S guarantees to Israel if it withdraws from Egyptian territory as Cairo pledges progress toward a new Israeli Egyptian accord. The Shah of Iran said Iran will continue oil shipments to Israel despite Arab support and suggested Iran would fill any Israeli oil gap if Abu Rudeis is returned to Egypt. He warned embargoes would not work due to Western oil stocks. Egyptian Foreign Minister Fahmy said Kissinger could advance a new Israeli Egyptian pact, but Egypt would go to war again if talks fail.
